The Race Towards Proliferation: International Court of Justice, 2014
Legal Committee
The International Court of Justice is responsible for resolving international legal conflicts between nations. Delegates in this committee will represent the lawyers involved in the Marshall Islands’ applications against nine states for their lack of progress on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation. This committee will have a unique structure and special rules of procedure, which will provide delegates even more ways to demonstrate their abilities to research, debate, and adapt.
As happens in the ICJ, delegates will first seek to establish the Court’s jurisdiction over each application. Next, delegates will work to prove or disprove the existence of a dispute between the parties subject to the Court’s jurisdiction. Finally, delegates will prosecute the case(s), drawing on precedent, international treaties, and their own legal opinions to change or preserve history. Due to the variety of paths the committee could follow, delegates will also have the opportunity to explore different characters as the committee progresses.
