United Nations High Commissioner For Refugees (UNHCR)

The UNHCR plays a key role in addressing disaster displacement by providing vital protection and assistance to all people forced to leave their homes due to natural disasters, climate change devastation, and man-made hazards. As extreme weather events and environmental crises intensify, so does the urgency to create coordinated, forward-thinking responses. In Topic A, delegates will work with governmental and local responders to develop and expand protection services for displaced people and embed conventional and climate-induced forms of displacement scenarios into national and international risk reduction frameworks. A comprehensive and inclusive approach to disaster displacement must also address the pre-existing vulnerabilities of existing communities and take into account the frequency and intensity of these disasters. Topic B addresses the often-overlooked vulnerabilities of displaced persons with psychiatric and/or physical disabilities, whose access to assistance, mobility, and safety is very frequently compromised in displacement settings. No one should be left behind, and as such, delegates will be tasked to develop robust frameworks to ensure disability inclusion is a central component in all contexts of displacement.
