From Widow to Warrior: Cory Aquino’s Presidential Campaign, 1985

 

In 1985, Philippine dictator Ferdinand Marcos called a surprise snap election in response to public outrage over the assassination of opposition leader Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino. His opponent? Ninoy’s widow, Corazon “Cory” Aquino, who had never been involved in politics beyond supporting her husband. Delegates will represent key figures of the opposition movement in their attempt to unseat the Marcos dictatorship despite mass voter disenfranchisement and electoral fraud. In the aftermath of the election, they will be tasked with guiding the Philippines to democracy after years of martial law. Further topics include the peaceful People’s Power Revolution that forced the Marcos family to flee the country and the millions embezzled by his administration.
