Non-Governmental Organizations Non-Governmental Organizations have become an undeniably powerful force in global politics. The end of the Cold War marked a new era for NGOs in aiding humanity when governments themselves could no adequately deal with internal or global problems. Free from the constraints inherent in governmental bodies, NGOs can effectively mobilize support, expand efforts, and collaborate perspectives for global causes across borders. Uniquely positioned as the only global representatives of the various voices of civil society, NGOs will play a vital role in this year's McGill Model United Nations 2009 General Assembly. This year at McMUN, the role of NGOs at the conference has been revamped in order to reflect their increasing influence on the global stage and as significant actors in the United Nations. Our new NGO forum is designed to generate greater participation and increased power of NGOs both during debate and in the formulation of viable solutions. An NGO delegate will have the opportunity to take part in auditing and debating various topics of their choice and offering solutions to different committees that they deem appropriate. As well, NGOs will make presentations to committees which hold potential for prospective projects. More than just contributing substantively to debate and discussion, NGO delegations will also have set funding budgets to finance projects they decide are worthy. Thus, with a dynamic role as both committee delegates, NGO forum contributors, group members, area experts, and financial sources, NGO delegates promise to play a challenging and fascinating role at McMUN 2009. |
